Many students and teenagers have so much on their plates, ranging from school to home life. Mental health is not something to ignore, which in many cases, it is. Reaching out for help can be very difficult, especially when everyone else around you seems to have their lives put together. When my school's health coordinator, Brooke Lawson, came to my innovations class for help on ways to manage stress, I jumped right in. My group and I came up with the idea to design a platform for students to use at school or at home when they have reached their breaking point and need help. Like the 8th grade convocation, we had to present this idea to our principal, then the administrative staff. Soon after, we met with Kelly Moore, HSE's integration specialist, and she helped us set up a canvas page, our school's learning management system. We included 6 pages named "Hotlines", "Meet the counselors", "Am I managing my stress in a healthy way?", "Club/sports contacts", "Parents- how can you help?", and "Bring change to mind". Bring change to mind is a club at HSE that revolves around mental health. As my group members and I are seniors, we will need to pass the canvas page on so it can continue to help the 3,000 plus HSE students. We plan on teaming up with Bring Change to Mind so the page can carry on. I have gained a lot of confidence throughout this project. I've learned even the craziest idea possible is worth sharing, and it is okay if ideas are shut down. You never know what others will think unless you speak out. Mental health is something I am so passionate about and helping others is my biggest goal in life, so I joined the two together! This would be a career I would love to go into, plus this would be an idea I would love to bring to college, wherever it is I decide to go. Education is a student's most valuable asset for success in the future, so their education should not be hindered by mental health, nor should education hinder their mental health. I am incredibly blessed for my amazing education, and I am glad I have learned to find a mindset that helps me realize it. I hope this canvas page will help students like me find that mindset as well.
