For my innovations project I was given the opportunity to speak to all of the 8th graders in the HSE school district about stress management.
Brooke Lawson, HSE's mental health coordinator, reached out to the innovations class at HSE, asking for help to find healthy ways to manage stress. I was super interested in this task, so I was paired with three friends who were also interested. We came up with the idea to talk to incoming freshman about the best ways to handle stress, along with making a page on our learning management system, canvas. When we presented our ideas to our principal, Mr. Hoover, he was all for it. He liked it so much that he wanted us to present to the administrative staff. They liked the thought of high school students talking to incoming freshman, so they made a time for us to speak while the 8th graders visited the high school for a field trip. We talked about a canvas page that we are in the process of making for students to use at home or at school when they feel they have reached their breaking point. The canvas page is our next goal so I will most likely make a page more specifically about that. Basically, we told them healthy versus unhealthy ways to manage stress, along with the information the canvas page would contain. It was crazy to watch that one spontaneous idea become so real. I never imagined myself going up on a stage talking about something I am so passionate towards. This project made me realize that it's okay to be proud of something you've accomplished, especially if you worked hard for it. I also realized that I am blessed to go to an amazing school where I have the help and resources I need to accomplish what I dream of. |
