Cadet Teaching
I have been cadet teaching at Geist Elementary since the start of the 2018 school year for my senior year. The first grade classroom that I am in is filled with the brightest and most creative kids I have ever met! I have been able to see what being a teacher is like in a school setting, along the side of one of my favorite teachers. This is an opportunity that I will never forget and I am so blessed to have been able to be apart of such an amazing class.

I believe teaching is not only about educating, but also about building connections.
“It is important for leaders to know their stories; to get them straight; to communicate them effectively, particularly to those who are in the thrall of rival stories; and, above all, to embody in their lives the stories that they tell.” -Howard Gardner
As a student in high school, I have learned some really important lessons from my teachers. Not just school lessons, but life lessons too. They have told me their personal stories that will help me in the future. These are the teachers that I personally like the most.

I believe children's voices matter.
“If the child is not learning the way you are teaching, then you must teach in the way the child learns” ~ Rita Dunn
A child can tell quickly which way they learn best. A lot of my first graders like doing partner projects or games. They enjoy working together and sharing out what they have learned. They participate in class because they are comfortable with their student peers. A lot of my high school teachers ask their classes if we would learn better from doing a project or from taking a test. They take our wants into consideration and like to give us a lot of freedom. This has helped me a lot personally in school. However I do still believe a teacher should do what they believe is best for their students.

I believe education can be taught in many different ways.
"The wider the range of possibilities we offer children, the more intense will be their motivations and the richer their experiences. We must widen the range of topics and goals, the types of situations we offer and their degree of structure, the kinds and combinations of resources and materials, and the possible interactions with things, peers, and adults." - Loris Malaguzzi
In my first grade class that I cadet teach for, my mentor teaches them several different ways. She reads books, plays games, assigns worksheets, gives examples, etc. This can be compared to solving math problems, there are many ways to find the answer. You can solve by counting on your fingers, drawing pictures, drawing tallies, using objects, and many more creative ways. I learn best by watching examples, others may like taking notes. It all just depends on the student.
